WHO Declares Dhulikhel as Nepal’s First ‘Healthy City’
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized Dhulikhel, a prominent tourism town in Kavrepalanchowk, as the first ‘healthy city’ in Nepal. The announcement, made by Dr. Suvajee Good, Programme Coordinator of WHO’s Department of Ethics and Social Determinants, also declared Dhulikhel the second healthiest city in Asia, earning it a reward of $5,000.
Dhulikhel secured this distinction by meeting WHO’s rigorous criteria, which include policy reforms in the health sector, sustainable development goals, environmental improvements, and enhanced access to healthcare for underprivileged citizens. The town also demonstrated significant progress in managing chronic and communicable diseases, community health improvements, and advancements in primary healthcare under the local government’s initiatives.
With a score of 65.48, Dhulikhel stands second only to Pune’s Banda City in India, which holds the top position as the healthiest city in Asia.
Mayor Ashok Kumar Byanju of Dhulikhel expressed pride in the town’s achievement, highlighting that this recognition reflects the collective efforts toward improving public health and environmental standards in the community. The $5,000 prize will further support the town’s ongoing health initiatives and sustainable development goals.
