1,233 Lives Lost in Road Accidents Over Six Months

A total of 1,233 people have lost their lives in road accidents across Nepal in the past six months of the current fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Despite a decrease in the number of accidents compared to the same period last year, the death toll has risen due to reckless driving and failure to adhere to traffic regulations.
Between July 17, 2023, and January 13, 2024, a total of 12,856 road accidents occurred, resulting in 1,149 fatalities. In contrast, 11,338 accidents were recorded in the same period this year, yet the number of deaths has increased to 1,233. The rise in fatalities was particularly observed in Gandaki, Kathmandu Valley, and Karnali, despite a decline in accidents in these regions. However, in provinces like Madhes and Bagmati, the number of accidents increased while fatalities declined.
The Ministry also reported that 3,134 suicides occurred in the past six months, compared to 3,457 in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. The highest number of cases was recorded between October 17 and November 15, followed by a gradual decrease in the following months.
Meanwhile, cybercrime complaints have surged, with 10,776 cases registered in the last six months. Telegram has been identified as the most misused platform for cybercrimes, followed by Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. The rise in cybercrime cases has been significant, with 19,730 complaints filed in the fiscal year 2023/24, up from 9,013 in 2022/23.
The increasing fatalities in road accidents, the concerning number of suicides, and the rise in cybercrime cases highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations, awareness programs, and effective interventions to ensure public safety and well-being.
