Nepal and India Supreme Courts Sign MoU to Strengthen Judicial Cooperation

The Supreme Court of Nepal and the Supreme Court of India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance judicial cooperation between the two countries. The agreement, signed today, aims to develop, promote, and strengthen collaboration across multiple areas of judicial work.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Prakash Man Singh Raut, Chief Justice of Nepal, Sanjiv Khanna, Chief Justice of India and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Government of India. The initiative draws on the longstanding cordial relations between Nepal and India and reflects a shared commitment to improving the administration of justice.

Under the agreement, both nations will facilitate mutual exchanges of information on recent developments in law and justice. The MoU also outlines plans for increased interaction between judges and judicial officials through exchange visits, training sessions, and academic programs, both short- and long-term.

In recognition of the growing importance of technology in modern judicial systems, the MoU also provides for the exchange of information on technological tools used by both judiciaries to manage backlogs, expedite court processes, and enhance public service delivery.

To ensure effective implementation, a Joint Working Group comprising officials from both Supreme Courts will be established to plan and execute cooperative initiatives.

India has previously entered into similar judicial cooperation agreements with the Supreme Courts of Israel, Singapore, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and with governments including Tunisia, Zambia, Morocco, and the Maldives.
