Bharatpur Mayor Urges Respect and Care for Elders, Emphasizes Value of Their Wisdom and Experience

Renu Dahal, the mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, highlighted the significance of passing down the knowledge and experiences of the elderly to younger generations. She spoke passionately about this during a function organized by Bharatpur Ward No. 25, which celebrated over 300 senior citizens and single women for their contributions to the community.

Mayor Dahal expressed concern about the declining respect for senior citizens among the youth, attributing this to a lack of awareness about the historical hardships faced by older generations. She underscored the importance of respecting and caring for the elderly, suggesting that neglect could inadvertently teach similar behaviors to the next generation.

“At a time when some opt to place elderly parents in nursing homes, it’s crucial to remember our values that teach us to revere parents as deities,” Dahal said. She also proposed recognizing family members who support the elderly with dignity during future events.

In her address, the mayor announced that over 16,000 senior citizens had been examined under a health initiative she championed, with plans underway to distribute medications door-to-door to treat various ailments.

Mayor Dahal called for social campaigns to foster positive attitudes towards senior citizens and outlined several policy decisions and programs initiated by the municipality to enhance their dignity. She emphasized the metropolis commitment to creating a harmonious environment for all residents, urging the community to actively participate in building a respectful and civilized Bharatpur.

The event was also attended by Ramu Godar, Chairman of Ward No. 24, Chabilal Sapkota, Chairman of Ward No. 25, and Homanath Bhandari, Principal of Prabhat Mavi, who shared their insights on the value of senior citizens in the community.
