Censorship Amidst Forest Fires: CCP’s Attempt to Conceal Truth

During China’s Lunar New Year holiday period starting from February 10th, reports of a significant forest fire in southwestern China were censored, as the ruling communist regime aimed to maintain a facade of peace and prosperity during the festive season.

From February 10th onwards, extensive forest fires ravaged areas near more than 20 cities, including Guiyang, Zunyi, Bijie, Jinsha, and Anshun, spanning across counties in Guizhou Province. Videos circulating online depicted the magnitude of the fires, resembling walls of flames engulfing the landscape. The burnt area reportedly equated to twice the size of Taiwan.

However, Chinese state media refrained from reporting on the fires until February 22nd. Official reports claimed that between February 10th and 21st, there were 221 forest fire incidents in Guizhou Province, resulting in 11 confirmed forest fires and two fatalities.

Online Censorship Measures

Given the regime’s history of concealing and distorting information during disasters, the claims made by Chinese state media remain unverifiable. Insiders disclosed to The Epoch Times that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) enforced censorship of news related to the forest fires.

A local resident involved in rescue efforts, identified as Song Yang (alias), shared his experience with The Epoch Times, stating that he posted a video of the forest fire online, only to receive a prompt message from local authorities demanding its removal. Song expressed apprehension about discussing the matter further due to fears of repercussions.

Additionally, a circulated message purportedly sent by a police officer warned residents against posting videos of fires on social media platforms, citing potential legal consequences if such actions led to negative public opinion.

Hiding Economic Decline

The forest fire incident coincides with the Chinese regime’s efforts to conceal economic downturns and unemployment issues among its populace. Analysis suggests that the regime delayed the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the CCP, aiming to avoid revealing weaknesses until a display of strength is assured.

Reports indicate that the CCP manipulated statistical data to mask youth unemployment rates and struggled to revive plummeting stock and property markets, resorting to stimulus policies and interest rate adjustments.

Natural Disasters Compound Challenges

In addition to economic woes, China grapples with frequent natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, and severe weather conditions. Recent incidents include a landslide in Yunnan Province and a powerful earthquake in Gansu Province, resulting in numerous casualties and displacements.

Despite these challenges, the CCP’s propaganda apparatus continues to propagate narratives of stability and prosperity, closely monitoring online content to maintain its official narrative.
