Constitutional Council Adjourns Meeting Without Recommending New Chief Justice

The Constitutional Council (CC) meeting, held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar on Tuesday, concluded without reaching a recommendation for the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The selection of the Chief Justice was a prominent item on the agenda during the meeting. However, due to the complexity of the matter and the importance of making an informed decision, the Council deemed it necessary to engage in further discussions, leading to the adjournment of the meeting.

Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, the Chairman of the National Assembly and the head of the Constitutional Council, addressed the media after the meeting, stating that they will reconvene at 5 o’clock on August 3 to continue their deliberations and finalize their recommendation.

The current Chief Justice, Hari Krishna Karki, is nearing the end of his tenure, scheduled to conclude on August 5, as per the age limit set by the constitution. The constitutional provision mandates that the recommendation for the new Chief Justice be made at least one month before the current Chief Justice’s term expires.

As of now, Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha holds the top position in the roll order of the Supreme Court, making him a potential candidate for the coveted position of Chief Justice.
