Lower Solukhola Hydropower Project Nears Completion

The Lower Solukhola Hydropower Project, with a capacity of 82 megawatts, is nearing completion, having achieved 95 percent physical progress.

Located in Tingla, Solukhumbu, the project has successfully completed major infrastructure, including the powerhouse, tunnel way, and installation of turbines and generators. Lower Solu Hydropower Company, the project’s promoter, is preparing for the breakthrough of the penstock tunnel in the near future.

“We are planning to launch commercial production by July,” said company manager Dharmendra Gotame.

The transmission line has also reached 80 percent completion. Initiated in September 2016, the project is backed by Rs 16 billion in loan funding from the European Bank and FMO. Completion is targeted before September 2025.

As a reservoir-based project, it features a reservoir at Salme, supplying water through a tunnel to the powerhouse in Bhadaure, about six kilometers away. The estimated project cost is expected to rise due to geographical challenges and the extensive tunnel system.

Currently, 700 workers, including local residents, are engaged in the project. Upon completion, the national grid will receive 23MW of power in winter and 82MW during the rainy season.
