Madhes Province: CM Yadav to Seek Vote of Confidence for Third Time Today

Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav of Madhes Province is set to undergo a crucial vote of confidence from the Provincial Assembly today, marking his third such test since assuming office. The assembly meeting has been convened for 2:00 pm to address this pivotal matter, following the withdrawal of support from the Janamat Party on January 23, 2024.

Constitutionally mandated, Yadav’s government is compelled to seek a vote of confidence within 30 days of any supporting party’s departure. This requirement arises from the Janamat Party’s withdrawal, echoing a similar scenario in June 2023 when the CPN (UML) withdrew its support, prompting Yadav’s second vote of confidence.

For Yadav to secure confidence, he needs the backing of at least 54 members out of the total 107 in the Provincial Assembly. With the largest party, CPN (UML), holding 23 seats, and other significant players like the Nepali Congress, Janata Samajwadi Party, Janamat Party, and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party in the fray, the dynamics of the vote remain uncertain.

The current government, led by the Janata Samajbadi Party, is supported by a coalition comprising the Nepali Congress, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Maoist Center, and CPN (Unified Socialist). Together, they command the allegiance of 65 assembly members, potentially providing a strong foundation for Yadav’s confidence bid.
