Madhes Province Holds Vast Development Potential: Prime Minister Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has highlighted the immense potential of Madhes Province, citing its fertile agricultural land, abundant water resources, and rich reserves of medicinal herbs in the Chure region. He stressed that coordinated efforts and the proper utilization of these resources are key to unlocking progress in the province.
Addressing the Madhes Province Assembly on Monday, Prime Minister Oli noted that the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Project, listed as a national pride initiative, will not only boost production and productivity but also foster unity between the people of the hills and the plains.
“Before we can talk about rights, we must address poverty,” the Prime Minister stated, emphasizing that overcoming poverty must be the nation’s foremost priority. “Only through a united journey toward development and prosperity can we truly empower our citizens.”
He cited major infrastructure projects — including the establishment of an industrial estate, a petroleum pipeline, a railway network, postal highways, expressways, and the Ramraja Prasad Singh Hospital — as critical foundations for economic growth in the region. PM Oli also encouraged lawmakers to envision Birgunj as a major trade hub and Janakpurdham as a center for cultural tourism.
Underscoring the importance of democratic values, the Prime Minister described the federal democratic republic as a historic achievement, gained through the collective struggle of the Nepali people. “This system should not be seen merely as a political structure, but as a platform to serve the people and strengthen democracy,” he said.
PM Oli praised the social and cultural harmony of Madhes, calling it one of the province’s defining qualities. He acknowledged the region’s long-standing contributions to Nepal’s independence, national unity, and self-respect, and urged leaders to use the autonomy granted by the constitution to drive local development.
He also reflected on the region’s rich cultural heritage, recalling the legacies of Rajarshi Janak, Mata Sita, Maharshi Parashuram, and Mahakavi Vidyapati. “These luminaries and sacred sites are profound sources of knowledge and inspiration,” he said.
The Prime Minister concluded by calling for stronger coordination among all three tiers of government to ensure effective governance and policy implementation in Madhes Province.
