Man Arrested for Swallowing Stolen Jewelry in Phidim

In a bizarre theft incident, 28-year-old Surendra Yongya was arrested on charges of stealing and subsequently swallowing a piece of golden jewelry. The incident occurred on April 10 at the residence of Bishnu Kumari Tamang in Phidim municipality-2.

According to Sumit Kushwaha, the Information Officer at the District Police Office, Yongya was caught red-handed by the police while attempting to steal from a steel cupboard in Tamang’s house. Although initially only found with Rs 15,000 in cash, suspicions arose when a 1 tola (approximately 11.7 grams) gold jewelry item was reported missing by the family.

Following a tip-off from the family, police had Yongya undergo an X-ray at District Hospital Phidim, which revealed the presence of the gold jewelry inside his stomach. The stolen item was later recovered from his feces approximately 36 hours after ingestion.

The District Police Office Panchthar has completed investigations and filed charges against Yongya in the District Court Panchthar. Although the court granted him bail on May 5 for Rs 150,000, Yongya was unable to post the amount and was subsequently sent to the District Jail Panchthar.

This unusual case highlights the lengths to which some individuals will go to conceal their crimes.
