Minister Dr. Birendra Prasad Mahato Deems COP28 Fruitful for Nepal’s Climate Priorities

Minister for Forest and Environment, Dr. Birendra Prasad Mahato, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the UN Climate Summit, COP28, highlighting its significance for Nepal’s climate-related concerns. Speaking to the RSS upon his return to Nepal after participating in the global climate event in Dubai, Minister Mahato underscored that Nepal’s issues were given priority during the summit.

“This time, we presented ourselves through a unified approach. Consequently, our voices resonated more prominently,” asserted Minister Mahato, emphasizing the success of Nepal’s representation at COP28.

The conference, which commenced on November 30 and will continue until December 12, provided a platform for robust discussions on climate-related challenges and solutions. Minister Mahato noted that the heightened priority for Nepal’s concerns was evident, attributing it to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Nepal on the eve of COP28.

Having its own pavilion at the summit, Nepal capitalized on the opportunity to effectively engage in discussions and interactions on climate change issues, as per Dr. Mahato’s observations. The Minister actively participated in various events, including addressing the ministerial-level program organized by the Asian Development Bank on December 3, held on the sidelines of the conference.

In addition to addressing the ministerial program, Minister Mahato spoke at another event, the ‘Launching Melamchi Disaster Damage Assessment Report’ program, also held on December 3. His participation in a multitude of sideline events showcased Nepal’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to the global discourse on climate change.

Dr. Mahato highlighted that the Nepali pavilion is scheduled to host over 14 sideline events in the coming days, providing a platform for further discussions and collaborations.

The Minister’s positive assessment of COP28 reinforces Nepal’s active participation and advocacy on the global stage regarding climate change. As discussions at the summit continue, Nepal remains committed to fostering international cooperation and addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change.
