Indian Foreign Minister Responds to Nepal’s New Map Inclusion on Currency Note

India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, has addressed the Nepal government’s decision to feature a new map, encompassing the disputed territories of Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulekh, on the one hundred rupee note.

During an interaction program organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar acknowledged the approval to alter the design of the Rs 100 banknote, replacing the old map with a new one in the background.

“I saw that report. I have not looked at it in detail. But I think our position is very clear. Our position, you know, with Nepal, we were having discussions about our boundary matters through a established platform. And then in the middle of that, they unilaterally took some measures on their side. But by doing something on their side, they are not going to change the situation between us or the reality on the ground.
It’s an hidesalit,” Dr. Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar’s comments underscored India’s stance on the matter, emphasizing the need for bilateral discussions to address boundary issues through established diplomatic channels.

The border dispute between Nepal and India has been a subject of ongoing deliberations at various levels, involving Prime Ministers, Ministers, Secretaries, Joint Secretaries, and security agencies. Despite differing mechanisms between the two nations, the issue remains unresolved.

Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, affirmed that the decision to feature the new map on the currency note was endorsed during a Cabinet meeting held on the 20th of Baisakh by the Government of Nepal. Previously, the note bore an old map.
