Nepal and India Army Chiefs to Hold Bilateral Talks on Defense Cooperation
The Chief of Army Staff of Nepal, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, and Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi are set to engage in formal bilateral talks today at the Nepal Army Headquarters in Kathmandu. The discussions will focus on enhancing defense and strategic cooperation between the two nations, according to Nepal Army spokesperson Assistant General Gaurav Kumar KC.
General Dwivedi, who arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday afternoon for a five-day official visit, will also meet with Nepalese leaders during his stay.
Honoring Tradition
In line with the longstanding tradition of military camaraderie between Nepal and India, President Ramchandra Paudel is scheduled to confer the honorary rank of “General of the Nepal Army” on General Dwivedi on Thursday. This practice reflects the historical and symbolic ties between the armed forces of the two neighboring countries.
Courtesy Calls
As part of his visit, General Dwivedi is set to hold courtesy meetings with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Defense Minister Manbir Rai on Friday. These engagements are expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore avenues for expanded military cooperation.
First Visit as Army Chief
This marks General Dwivedi’s first official visit to Nepal since assuming the role of Indian Army Chief on June 30, 2024. His visit underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining robust defense and strategic partnerships amidst evolving regional dynamics.
Nepal and India share a long history of military cooperation, and these high-level engagements aim to reinforce mutual trust and collaboration in addressing shared security challenges.
