Nepal Takes Stance Against Racism and Discrimination at Global Forum in Sao Paulo

Kathmandu – Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Dhan Raj Gurung, played a pivotal role in the opening ceremony of the third edition of the Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination in Sao Paulo, Brazil, held under the auspices of UNESCO on November 29, 2023.

The theme for this year’s forum, ‘Race to the Top: Putting racial equity and justice at the forefront of development agendas,’ set the stage for discussions on global efforts to combat racism and discrimination.

In his address during the ministerial segment, Minister Gurung shared significant strides made in Nepal’s policy, legal, and institutional landscapes since the enactment of the Constitution in 2015. Emphasizing the commitment to ending discrimination and ensuring social justice, Minister Gurung outlined key constitutional provisions designed to protect and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Embassy of Nepal in Brasilia highlighted Minister Gurung’s affirmation of the Government of Nepal’s dedication to eradicating all forms of discrimination, including those based on caste and gender. The audience acknowledged Nepal’s accomplishments in fostering inclusive governance, exemplified by representative parliamentary and administrative structures.

Nepal called for international cooperation in capacity building for countries in need, aiming to empower them in achieving equity and justice goals. Minister Gurung underlined Nepal’s democratic polity and strong political will as driving forces propelling this agenda forward. Reiterating Nepal’s commitment to international human rights instruments, he referenced the National Penal Code and the Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability Act, illustrating Nepal’s ‘zero tolerance’ approach beginning to yield positive outcomes.

On the sidelines of the forum, Minister Gurung engaged in discussions with UNESCO officials, exchanging views on matters of mutual interest. A slated interaction with the Nepali community in Brazil is scheduled for tomorrow, where Minister Gurung, accompanied by Ambassador Nirmal Raj Kafle, is leading a three-member delegation.

Nepal stands firm in its commitment to combating racism and discrimination, showcasing its progress and calling for global collaboration in the pursuit of justice and equality.
