Phewa Festival Begins in Pokhara to Celebrate Nepali New Year

The much-anticipated Phewa Festival has officially kicked off in Pokhara, bringing a vibrant mix of culture, cuisine, and entertainment to the Lake City. Organized by the Hotel Association of Pokhara, the three-day event coincides with the celebration of the Nepali New Year 2082 BS and will run until April 14.
In honor of the festival’s 20th edition, hotels in Pokhara are offering a 20 percent discount to visiting tourists. According to Association President and Festival Coordinator Laxman Subedi, this year’s special attraction will be a cultural showcase of Bhaktapur’s iconic Bisket Jatra—a centuries-old festival deeply rooted in Newar tradition.
The festival also highlights the rich heritage of Gandaki Province, featuring cultural presentations from all 11 districts. Visitors can expect a variety of musical performances, including traditional bhajans and ratyauli songs. The event spans a three-kilometre stretch from Khaharechowk to Damsite, and entry is free to all.
In addition to cultural displays, the festival will include indigenous food stalls, traditional games, and a province-level tourist race. A new feature this year is the introduction of the Phewa Festival Badminton Cup, expected to draw wide interest.
With support from the Nepal Tourism Board’s Gandaki Province office and Pokhara Metropolitan City, organizers are optimistic about turnout. Currently, hotel occupancy in Pokhara stands at around 60 percent, but it is expected to rise to 90 percent during the festival, said Subedi.
The Phewa Festival not only welcomes the New Year but also aims to boost tourism and showcase the cultural diversity of the region.
