RSP Chairman Lamichhane Files Defamation Case Against Kantipur Publication

Rabi Lamichhane, Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and former Deputy Prime Minister, has taken legal action against Kantipur Publication, accusing them of defamation. The case was officially registered at the Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday.

Asserting himself as a defender of press freedom, Lamichhane justified his decision to file the case as a continuation of his unwavering commitment to integrity, irrespective of the outcome. He expressed his stance on social media, emphasizing that he is not one to make baseless accusations but is addressing issues related to news reports that allegedly tarnish his reputation.

In a statement on social media, Lamichhane said, “I am not someone to make accusations. However, concerning the issues raised in the news, I am in legal consultation regarding my name, allegations, and other related matters. Throughout my life, I have fought for the freedom of the press under the strong foundation of democracy. If I fail to ease the suffering of cooperative victims speaking strongly against injustice, then I will not show my face to the voters. This is my pledge.”

Lamichhane strongly refuted the content in the news that he claims is systematically defaming him and pledged to take legal action against those responsible for spreading what he called ‘misleading’ information.

The case against Kantipur Publication adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding press freedom and responsible journalism, with Rabi Lamichhane standing firm in his resolve to protect his reputation against what he deems as unfounded allegations. The legal proceedings are expected to shed light on the intricacies of the allegations and the publication’s defense in the coming weeks.
