SC Questions Government on Prohibited Zones in Capital

The Supreme Court (SC) has directed the government to provide valid reasons for designating certain areas as prohibited zones in the capital city. This decision comes after a show cause order was issued by SC Justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai on Friday.

As of now, the Supreme Court has upheld the government’s decision to declare specific zones as prohibited. However, a discussion between the involved parties has been summoned by the SC to determine whether an interim order should be granted, as per the request made by the writ petitioner.

The controversy stems from an order issued by the Kathmandu District Administration Office on November 21, declaring an area stretching from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwar as a prohibited zone. In response to this, Advocate Swagat Nepal filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on the same day. The petition argues that the decision by the local administration infringes upon the rights of citizens, and the petitioner is seeking an interim order to annul the administration’s decision. The case is set to unfold as both parties engage in discussions before the Supreme Court.
