Taiwan Condemns China’s “Shameless” Response to Earthquake Thanks

Taiwan has lashed out against China, labeling its actions as “shameless” following Beijing’s attempt to exploit a devastating earthquake on the island for political purposes. The condemnation comes after China’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations expressed gratitude for international concern over the earthquake that struck Taiwan’s eastern region, claiming the earthquake in “China’s Taiwan.”

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake, which struck eastern Taiwan and resulted in the loss of 10 lives, prompted international expressions of sympathy and offers of assistance. However, China’s attempt to assert its influence over Taiwan, a democratically-governed territory with its own government, has been met with strong opposition from Taipei.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite never having ruled the island, has rebuked Beijing’s actions, citing them as a flagrant disregard for Taiwan’s sovereignty and a clear attempt at psychological warfare. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning China’s exploitation of the earthquake for what it termed “cognitive operations internationally.”

The ministry’s statement underscores Taiwan’s frustration with China’s ongoing attempts to assert control over its affairs, despite lacking any legitimate authority to do so. It further emphasizes that China’s actions demonstrate a lack of goodwill towards Taiwan and highlight the necessity for the international community to recognize Taiwan’s autonomy.

Despite China’s claims, Taiwan maintains its own government, distinct from that of mainland China, and enjoys support from various nations, including the United States, which has historically been a key ally. The Republic of China government, which retreated to Taiwan in 1949 following the Chinese Civil War, continues to represent the island on the global stage.

In the face of China’s persistent efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty, Taipei remains resolute in defending its autonomy and rejecting any attempts at coercion or manipulation by Beijing. The recent condemnation serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and support for Taiwan’s right to self-determination.
