USG for peace operations calls on Defense Minister Khadka

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Purna Bahadur Khadka.

In the meeting held at the Ministry of Defense today, Deputy Prime Minister Khadka said the Government of Nepal is committed to the peace keeping operations carried out by the UN and could send up to 10,000 peacekeepers at the call of the United Nations.

He also shared that as part of commitment to the United Nations Environment Protection Strategy, projects related to alternative energy to reduce carbon emissions have been implemented in cooperation with the Birendra Peace Keeping Training Center and various missions.

On the occasion, Under-Secretary-General Lacroix praised the role played by Nepal in international peacekeeping operations and for continuous deployment of peacekeepers at the call of the United Nations.

Appreciating the role played by Nepal in the implementation of the United Nations Environment Protection Strategy, he said that the United Nations is ready to cooperate with Nepal in making all peace keeping missions low in carbon emission.

The Deputy Secretary General is on a four-day visit to Nepal and is also scheduled to call on the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. During the visit, Lacroix will attend various programs related to the United Nations and the Nepali Peacekeeping Force.
