Bharat Raj Paudyal Set to Become Ambassador to Canada

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has given its unanimous endorsement to Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal as Nepal’s ambassador to Canada. The decision came after a thorough hearing on Sunday, during which lawmakers posed various questions to Paudyal regarding his vision for strengthening bilateral relations and advancing Nepal’s interests.

Paudyal’s nomination had been put forward by a Cabinet meeting a month ago, and the committee’s endorsement marks a crucial step in the formalization of his appointment. The Foreign Secretary will officially assume his responsibilities once the President formally appoints him to the position.

During the hearing, Paudyal successfully addressed queries from lawmakers, leading to the committee’s unanimous support for his candidacy. His diplomatic experience and vision for fostering positive relations with Canada played a pivotal role in securing the endorsement.

In addition to his role as the ambassador to Canada, Paudyal is slated to serve as the non-residential Nepali ambassador to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Haiti. Furthermore, he will take on the role of permanent representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Bharat Raj Paudyal has a distinguished diplomatic career, having been promoted to the position of foreign secretary in October 2020. His prior experience includes serving as Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan from May 2012 to May 2016, during which time he held concurrent accreditation as Nepal’s non-residential ambassador to Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. As he assumes this new role, Paudyal is expected to leverage his expertise to further enhance Nepal’s diplomatic presence on the international stage.
