Criticism Over Welcome Arrangements for West Indies ‘A’ Team by CAN

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has faced public criticism for its handling of the welcome ceremony for the West Indies ‘A’ cricket team, who arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday. The team is here to participate in a T-20 series against Nepal.

Critics and social media users have taken issue with what they perceive as inadequate hospitality provided to the visiting team, specifically concerning the transportation arrangements for the players’ luggage and equipment.

Upon their arrival to participate in a T-20 series against Nepal, starting from April 27, 2024, photographs and videos surfaced on social media showing the team’s cricket gear being loaded into a jeep, a vehicle many deemed unsuitable for such purposes. The images quickly went viral, leading to widespread criticism of CAN’s management of the event.

Social media users have also directed their frustration towards the Minister of Sports, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, questioning the level of oversight and support provided to international sports delegations visiting Nepal.

The series, which is set to be held at the Tribhuvan International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu, includes matches on April 27, April 28, May 1, and the final on May 4. While the matches are highly anticipated, the controversy surrounding the team’s reception casts a shadow over the event.

CAN has yet to formally respond to the criticisms. The incident raises concerns about the potential impact on Nepal’s reputation as a host for international cricket events. As preparations for the upcoming games continue, all eyes will be on how CAN addresses these issues and ensures a hospitable environment for all visiting teams in the future.
