Curfew Imposed in Parts of Birgunj Continues Amidst Tensions

The District Administration Office Parsa has upheld the curfew order in select areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City, extending the measures initiated earlier.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Dinesh Sagar Bhusal announced the continuation of the curfew following a notice issued on Monday evening. Effective from 5 pm on Monday until further notice, the curfew remains in place.

Initially imposed indefinitely, the curfew saw a temporary relaxation today from 6 am to 10 am, aimed at facilitating public convenience. Bhusal highlighted the morning reprieve, noting its purpose to accommodate citizens.

A pivotal meeting involving stakeholders convened at 11.30 am to assess the situation and determine the curfew’s future. Bhusal indicated that the decision would hinge upon the deliberations during this assembly.

The curfew encompasses areas bounded by Nagawa Chowk in the east, Tilabe Bridge in the west, Parbanipur Parsa in the north, and Miteri Pul (Custom) in the south of Birgunj city.

Bhusal attributed the imposition of the curfew to clashes erupting during protests led by the Hindu Samaj following an altercation at Ishanath Municipality in Rautahat.

Security measures have been escalated within Birgunj Metropolitan City in response to the curfew enforcement. DSP Kumar Bikram Thapa confirmed the deployment of around 1,000 security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force to various locations to address security apprehensions.
