Natural and human-induced disasters claimed 745 lives across Nepal in the year 2081 BS, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
A total of 8,861 disaster-related incidents were recorded between April 12, 2024, and April 11, 2025. In addition to the fatalities, 69 people went missing and 1,702 sustained injuries, said Authority spokesperson Ram Bahadur KC.
Disasters affected 18,991 households, causing property damage estimated at Rs 3.13 billion.
Landslides were the deadliest, claiming 351 lives, followed by floods (97), lightning strikes (78), and fire-related incidents (77). Other causes included heavy rainfall (8), wildlife attacks (43), altitude sickness (24), air crashes (23), snakebites (19), forest fires (10), storms (7), a boat accident (1), and miscellaneous incidents (7).
Among those missing, 48 were due to landslides, 18 from floods, and three from avalanches.
In terms of frequency, fire was the most common disaster, with 4,145 incidents reported. This was followed by 1,195 forest fires and 1,005 landslides. The year also saw 568 incidents caused by heavy rainfall, 418 floods, 418 lightning strikes, 477 wildlife attacks, 111 altitude sickness cases, 84 snakebite incidents, 349 storms, two air crashes, one boat accident, six avalanches, 74 earthquakes, one hailstorm, and seven other disaster-related events.
