Former King Gyanendra Extends New Year Wishes, Expresses Concern Over Recent Violence

Former King Gyanendra Shah has extended heartfelt New Year greetings to all Nepalis at home and abroad, expressing hopes for national peace, unity, and happiness.
In a video message released on the occasion of the New Year 2082 BS, the former monarch emphasized the importance of harmony and mutual respect among citizens. “I have always remained conscious and sensitive to the fact that there should be no conflict among Nepalis, and that the nation should not be marred by violence and mistrust,” he said.
Referring to the recent unrest in Tinkune, Kathmandu, Gyanendra expressed deep sorrow over the human and material losses resulting from the violent demonstrations, arson, and vandalism that occurred just days earlier. While he did not comment directly on the cause of the incidents, his tone reflected concern for the social unrest and growing divisions in the country.
The former king’s message comes at a time of heightened public discourse and protests surrounding issues of national identity, governance, and the role of monarchy. His brief but pointed statement has drawn attention from both supporters of the former monarchy and broader segments of society who are reflecting on Nepal’s current challenges.
Gyanendra Shah, who stepped down from the throne in 2008 following the abolition of the monarchy, continues to release occasional public messages, particularly during major festivals and national occasions. His remarks are often interpreted as subtle interventions into national affairs, especially when social tensions rise.
As the nation ushers in a new year, the former king’s appeal for unity and peace has added to the broader chorus of calls for stability and reconciliation amid a shifting political landscape.
