Historic 15th-Century Nirfu Monastery in Mustang Rebuilt with German Support
The historic Nirfu Monastery, located in Chooser, Lomanthang Rural Municipality-1 in Mustang, has been fully rebuilt after suffering damage in the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. Dating back to the 15th century, the monastery’s restoration was supported by the German Embassy in Kathmandu, which provided Rs 6.6 million in funding, preserving its original architectural design.
Situated in a cave, the monastery features a main building with three rooms, and a library is being set up as part of the reconstruction efforts. Since 2004, the monastery has also run Lama classes, with 60 students currently enrolled in its religious education program up to the eighth grade.
Entry to the monastery costs Rs 100 for Nepalis and Rs 1,000 for foreigners. It is accessible via a five-minute vehicle ride from Nechhung on the Beni-Jomsom Korola road.
