Holi Celebration Turns Deadly in Nepal: Young Man Drowns in Karnali River

In a tragic turn of events amidst the colorful celebrations of Holi, a festive gathering on Nepal’s Karnali Bridge turned into a scene of horror as 17 youths plunged into the river below, with one of them meeting a fatal end.

The bridge, usually a bustling spot for festivities and gatherings, witnessed an unexpected turn when a group of youths, intoxicated by the spirit of the festival and possibly under the influence of alcohol, decided to leap into the river. Despite the presence of onlookers capturing the moment on their mobile phones, no one intervened to prevent the risky behavior.

Criticism has been leveled at the nearby police office in Chisapani for their alleged failure to intervene and stop the youths from endangering themselves. Reports indicate that the police attempted to deter the group initially, but the youths persisted, citing their intention to capture a group photo and enjoy the occasion with friends.

Among those who jumped into the river was Lokendra Shahi, a 30-year-old from Lamkichuha Municipality-3 in Kailali. Despite lacking proficiency in swimming, Lokendra joined his friends in the leap, driven by the festive fervor and camaraderie.

Tragically, Lokendra’s enthusiasm turned into a fatal misstep as he drowned in the swirling currents of the Karnali River. Despite immediate efforts by locals and security personnel to locate him, his body was discovered lifeless, marking a devastating end to what was meant to be a joyous celebration.

As the news of Lokendra’s untimely demise spreads, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of caution and responsibility, even in moments of revelry. The festive cheer has been overshadowed by grief as the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young life, leaving a somber note amidst the vibrant colors of Holi.

Amidst the sadness, there’s also a lesson to be learned – the consequences of recklessness can be dire, and it’s crucial to prioritize safety and well-being, especially during times of celebration.
