ICC Shifts 2024 U-19 Cricket World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to relocate the upcoming 2024 ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa. The decision was made during the ICC Board meeting held on Tuesday, citing the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket due to government interference in the national cricket board’s administration.

The ICC, in a media release following the board meeting, stated, “After hearing representation from SLC, the ICC Board decided that Sri Lanka can continue to compete internationally both in bilateral cricket and ICC events after being suspended recently for breaching its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.”

The 16-team tournament is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 4, and the decision to shift the venue to South Africa comes as a logistical solution to ensure the smooth conduct of the prestigious event. The move is expected to impact travel arrangements, logistical planning, and fan engagement but aims to uphold the integrity and independence of cricket administration.

As a result of this change, Nepal finds itself placed in Group D alongside cricket powerhouses Afghanistan, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Cricket enthusiasts and participating nations are now awaiting further details regarding the revised schedule, venues, and logistical arrangements for the tournament in its new South African setting.

The ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup serves as a platform for emerging cricket talents to showcase their skills on the global stage, and this venue shift adds a unique chapter to the tournament’s history. South Africa, known for its cricketing prowess, is set to provide an exciting and competitive backdrop for the young cricketing prodigies aiming to make their mark in the sport.
