India-Sri Lanka Friendship Revealed During Economic Crisis, Says Sri Lankan Minister

Sri Lankan Minister for Water Resources and Estate Infrastructure, Jeevan Thondaman, emphasized the strength of the India-Sri Lanka relationship, which was exemplified during the recent economic crisis. In a press briefing at Chennai Airport after his one-week trip to India, he highlighted the importance of finding a “permanent solution” to the fishermen issue, as it plays a crucial role in enhancing cultural and economic ties between the two nations.

During his visit, Thondaman, along with Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The discussions covered various topics, and several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed in the renewable sector.

The economic crisis shed light on who stood as a true friend of Sri Lanka, as the relationship between India and Sri Lanka proved to be strong and close. While a few may have attempted to use politics to create a negative image of India among Sri Lankan people, the reality of the friendship prevailed during the challenging times, as per Thondaman.

Issues pertaining to Tamilians, particularly the fishermen’s problems, were also discussed during the meeting with PM Modi. The Sri Lankan delegation submitted the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution for consideration during their talks. Additionally, discussions were held regarding refugees in refugee camps, addressing the concerns and challenges arising from the economic crisis.

Sri Lankan Minister Jeevan Thondaman meets Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, fostering stronger ties between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu.

During his visit to India, Thondaman also met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to discuss a permanent solution to the fishermen’s issues. He pointed out that both sides share a common Tamil heritage and are fighting for their livelihoods. Thondaman emphasized the significance of finding a permanent solution to the issue, as the cultural and economic connection between India and Sri Lanka is vital.

Regarding refugees seeking refuge in Tamil Nadu due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Thondaman stated that his country is actively working on developing its economy to address the issue effectively.

The visit to India has further strengthened the bonds between the two nations and has opened avenues for collaboration and support during challenging times. As the economic ties continue to deepen, both India and Sri Lanka seek to find comprehensive solutions to pressing issues, fostering a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership.
