Lahore Declared World’s Most Polluted City as Air Quality Deteriorates

Pakistan’s Lahore has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 354, categorizing it as “Hazardous” for residents, according to IQAir’s latest global rankings. Karachi, the country’s largest city, follows at 13th place with an AQI of 164, classified as “Unhealthy.”

Lahore’s severe air pollution is attributed to vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and crop burning. With a population exceeding 11 million, the city has long battled poor air quality, particularly during colder months when smog intensifies.

The impact on public health has been alarming. Over 1.8 million individuals have fallen ill due to the smog in the past month, with more than 1,29,000 seeking hospital treatment for respiratory issues. Additionally, over six million people have been diagnosed with cardiothoracic conditions, while an average of 69,399 patients report daily with respiratory problems, chest pain, or stroke caused by air pollution.

Karachi, with its busy port, heavy traffic, and industrial zones, continues to grapple with worsening air pollution. The AQI of 164 highlights significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations with pre-existing conditions.

The Climate Action Centre (CAC), an environmental NGO, has identified vehicle emissions as a leading cause of air pollution in Punjab’s cities, including Lahore, as well as in Karachi. According to CAC Director Yasir Hussain, petrol and diesel vehicle emissions account for 80% of Lahore’s air pollution and 60% of Karachi’s.

The air pollution crisis coincides with a measles outbreak in Punjab, raising further alarms among health experts. Measles, a highly contagious disease marked by fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rashes, poses a significant threat to malnourished or unvaccinated children.

Doctors have urged parents to ensure children receive measles vaccinations between nine months and 18 months of age to curb the outbreak.

Despite efforts to address air pollution, Lahore and Karachi continue to face deteriorating air quality. Experts emphasize that urgent interventions are needed to reduce emissions, improve public health infrastructure, and mitigate the long-term environmental impact of unchecked pollution.
