Lumbini’s Chief Minister Headed to US Amid Earthquake Crisis

An earthquake that struck Jajarkot in Karnali province last Friday night sent shockwaves through neighboring Lumbini province, leaving a trail of destruction and injuries in its wake. While citizens grappled with the aftermath of the disaster, Chief Minister of Lumbini, Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary, came under intense scrutiny for embarking on an international trip on Sunday amidst the calamity.

The earthquake’s impact was felt as far as Rolpa in Lumbini province, where two people sustained injuries. The devastation didn’t stop there, with three more injuries reported in Pyuthan and an additional casualty in Arghakhanchi.

The timing of Chief Minister Chaudhary’s overseas visit on Sunday has raised eyebrows and sparked controversy. Critics argue that his absence during this crucial time has demonstrated a lack of concern for the suffering of his constituents.

Members of Parliament, including those from Chaudhary’s own party, have expressed their dismay, claiming that the Chief Minister’s departure for the US amid the earthquake disaster sends a discouraging message. They argue that his inability to postpone his personal visit at such a critical time reflects a lack of commitment to his constituents and their welfare.

One Congress Member of Parliament (MP) even alleged that the Chief Minister’s visit to the United States was primarily for personal reasons, rather than an official engagement. It has been reported that Chaudhary’s son resides in America, and his travel plans include participation in various non-official events, such as ‘The Assembly State of New York’ and the ‘Albanic 30th District’ program.

These revelations have raised serious questions about the priorities and responsibilities of the Chief Minister during a natural disaster.

The opposition has questioned the Chief Minister’s priorities, highlighting the urgency of the situation in the quake-affected regions. The ruling parties, on the other hand, have themselves expressed its frustration with Chaudhary’s failure to complete the formation of the cabinet during this critical period.
