Madhesh CM Satish Kumar Singh to Receive ‘Mahamurkha’ Title at Janakpurdham’s Holi Festival

Madhesh Pradesh Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh is set to receive the title of ‘Mahamurkha’ at this year’s Mahamurkha Sammelan, a satirical cultural event held annually in Janakpurdham on the occasion of the Holi festival. The announcement was made today during the second day of the event, organized by the Mithila Natya Kala Parishad (MINAP).

The Mahamurkha Sammelan, a long-standing tradition in Mithilanchal, is known for its humorous and cultural performances aimed at preserving the region’s rich artistic and literary heritage. The festival features satirical poetry, performances, and the traditional Maithili folk songs of Khyal Thatta and Jogira. According to Sunil Mallik, former president of MINAP, the event serves as a platform to safeguard Mithila’s cultural expressions, which are at risk of fading amid the growing influence of Bhojpuri music.

The Mahamurkha title has been awarded since 2061 BS, recognizing individuals from diverse backgrounds, including poets, politicians, and social figures, through a blend of satire and celebration. Previous recipients include Maithili poet Naresh Thakur, political analyst CK Lal, former minister Ramchandra Jha, and several leaders from major political parties such as Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the Sadbhavana Party.

The festival not only entertains but also acts as a cultural movement to preserve the traditional artistic forms of Mithila while offering a humorous take on contemporary social and political issues.
