Minister Gurung Hails Ghalegaun’s Role in Promoting Homestay Tourism Across Nepal

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, inaugurated the Ghalegaun Tourism Silver Jubilee Celebrations today at the scenic Gurung village of Ghalegaun in Lamjung. The event, organized by the Ghalegaun Tourism Management Committee, commemorates 25 years of Ghalegaun’s journey as a model for community-based tourism in Nepal.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Gurung—who also serves as the government spokesperson—praised Ghalegaun’s transformation from a remote village into a “smart village” and a leading tourist destination. “Ghalegaun has overcome geographic and infrastructural challenges through unity, political will, and active community involvement,” he said.

Highlighting Ghalegaun’s pioneering role in Nepal’s homestay tourism model, Gurung noted that the concept, which began in this village, has now spread to all 77 districts across the country. In Gandaki Province alone, 306 homestay facilities are registered, with the majority reportedly thriving.

Calling Ghalegaun “the best touristic destination in Nepal,” the Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening rural tourism. He described Nepal’s villages as “living museums” that reflect the nation’s cultural richness, ethnic diversity, and natural beauty. “While fate may be uncertain, our destiny is shaped by determination, sound policies, and meaningful actions,” he added.

The silver jubilee celebration drew a wide range of participants, including locals, homestay operators, elected officials, and representatives from various organizations. The event featured cultural performances, exhibitions of local products, tourism-related dialogues, and the exchange of ideas and experiences aimed at further promoting rural tourism.
