NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba Hails Agreement on Transitional Justice as Historic
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has underscored the importance of the agreement reached to address issues related to transitional justice, a vital component of Nepal’s peace process. Speaking during deliberations on the Bill to amend the Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act (TRC Bill) – 2079 BS, Deuba described the consensus as a significant milestone.
Deuba, who also leads the NC parliamentary party, emphasized that the unanimous support for the Bill from all political parties and stakeholders marks a historic moment. “We have managed to reliably conclude the remaining but crucial chapters of the peace process. All political parties and stakeholders are united in their support for the Bill, making this a historic achievement,” he stated.
Highlighting the need for effective legislation and a competent commission to handle transitional justice matters, Deuba urged all involved parties to contribute positively to resolving these issues rather than casting doubt or assigning blame.
The former Prime Minister noted that the national consensus on the Bill demonstrates that Nepali political parties are capable of addressing complex issues independently. He expressed confidence that Nepal’s approach to the peace process could serve as a global example.
According to Deuba, the Bill upholds the core principles of transitional justice, ensuring truth, justice, reparations for survivors, and the prevention of future conflicts. He stressed that the Bill aligns with the norms of transitional justice, existing laws, Supreme Court verdicts, and international standards.
Deuba also acknowledged the prolonged struggle of conflict survivors for justice, noting that inadequate reparations have added to their suffering. He expressed hope that the survivors will feel justice has been served once the Bill is enacted into law.
