Nepali Army Embarks on Gorakha-Kathmandu Trek to Promote Historic Unification Route
A Nepali Army (NA) squad has set out on a symbolic march along the historic Gorkha-Kathmandu route, retracing the path used by King Prithvi Narayan Shah during Nepal’s unification campaign in the 18th century.
The trek, which began at Hanuman Bhanjyang Chautara within the Gorkha Durbar premises, aims to highlight the historical significance of the unification route and culminates in Kathmandu on Prithvi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, observed on Push 27 in the Nepali calendar (January 11). This day is also celebrated as National Unification Day in Nepal.
The journey will traverse Dhading and Nuwakot districts before concluding at a special ceremony at Hanumandhoka, Kathmandu. The trek is part of a long-standing tradition to honor King Prithvi Narayan Shah (1723–1775), who initiated Nepal’s unification in 1743 and relocated the royal seat of power to Kathmandu.
Lieutenant Colonel Ashok Kumar Chhetri, chief of the NA’s Ripumardan Battalion, stated that the march symbolizes national unity and pays homage to Nepal’s rich history. The event is supported by Gorkha Municipality and Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality and has been an annual endeavor for the past six years.
At the departure ceremony, NA personnel carried the national flag and ceremonial lights to mark the beginning of the trek. The ceremony was attended by local representatives, officials, and Chief District Officer of Gorkha, Punya Bikram Paudel, who emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Nepal’s historical and cultural heritage.
This historic march serves as a reminder of Nepal’s journey toward unity and the enduring legacy of King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
