Ruling Alliance Rejects High-Level Probe Commission, Smuggled Gold Weighs 60.789 kg

In a significant development, the ruling alliance has firmly rejected the establishment of a high-level probe commission to investigate the recent gold scam, a decision reached during a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. Top leaders from the ruling coalition, including Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Chairperson of Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Mahantha Thakur, collectively voiced their stance against the creation of such a commission.

Chief Whip of the Nepali Congress, Ramesh Lekhak, emphasized that the ongoing investigation into the gold scam by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police is progressing effectively. The alliance believes that the demand for a high-level probe commission is an attempt to disrupt the investigation’s momentum and divert attention from the core issue.

The meeting also addressed critical national matters, including the Gaur massacre and the Lalita Niwas land scam. The ruling coalition emphasized its commitment to resolving the Gaur massacre in compliance with the law and assured the public that the truth behind the Lalita Niwas land scandal would be revealed in due course.

Furthermore, the ruling alliance acknowledged the ongoing investigations into the alleged involvement of Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former Speaker and CPN (Maoist Centre) Spokesperson.

Simultaneously, the Nepal Rastra Bank disclosed that the confiscated gold from a recent smuggling attempt weighs a significant 60.789 kilograms. The gold was surreptitiously transported from Hong Kong to Nepal concealed within the brake shoes of a motorcycle. The meticulous efforts of the Revenue Investigation Department led to the detection and seizure of this contraband.

Mr. Thaneshwor Acharya, Chief of the Mint Division at Nepal Rastra Bank, clarified that the provided weight is preliminary and that the exact weight will be confirmed following the melting process, scheduled to commence at 10:30 am on Tuesday. Monetary valuation of the seized gold will follow the melting process, estimated to take a day, with a comprehensive three-day evaluation to determine its complete monetary value.

The Revenue Investigation Department has entrusted the intricate investigation of this gold smuggling case to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, underlining the nation’s commitment to tackling such illicit activities and ensuring justice prevails.

These developments underscore the dynamic nature of Nepal’s political landscape and its unyielding resolve to uphold the rule of law and protect its economic integrity. (RSS)
