Biting Cold Grips Nepal as Mercury Takes a Dive

The mercury continues its descent, bringing a surge in cold temperatures across Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley. The minimum temperature in Kathmandu today plummeted to 4.5 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of 19 degrees Celsius.

This chilling trend has persisted for the last three to four days, with the minimum temperature ranging between 4 to 5 degrees Celsius and the maximum hovering around 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Meteorological Forecasting Division, has issued a warning, urging citizens to take necessary precautions as the country experiences a noticeable drop in temperature.

Kathmandu, in particular, is grappling with an intensification of extreme cold, even though the days remain sunny. The mornings and evenings are marked by a significant chill, making it imperative for residents to bundle up.

Jumla and Jomsom are among the coldest regions, recording temperatures as low as minus 2.8 degrees Celsius and minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division.

The current weather pattern is influenced by a partial impact of the Westerly wind in Nepal, resulting in partly cloudy to generally fair conditions. Tonight, the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces are expected to experience partly to generally cloudy weather, while the rest of the provinces will see partly cloudy to generally fair conditions.

Looking ahead to December 23, the weather forecast indicates a continuation of partly to generally cloudy conditions in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, with partly cloudy to mostly fair conditions in the remaining provinces.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division also predicts the possibility of light rain in some areas of the hilly regions in Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces. Additionally, there is a chance of light snowfall in select high-hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance in the face of challenging weather conditions.
