Mata Tirtha Aunsi Celebrated Across Nepal with Gifts and Rituals

Nepalis across the country are observing Mata Tirtha Aunsi, known commonly as Mother’s Day, this Wednesday. This culturally significant day is marked by children expressing their gratitude and affection towards their mothers with gifts including sweets, fruits, ornaments, and clothes.

In a poignant tribute to maternal bonds, married daughters traditionally visit their maternal homes to present gifts and seek blessings. Meanwhile, those mourning the loss of their mothers gather at Mata Tirtha Kunda in Chandragiri Municipality, Kathmandu. It is believed that performing rituals here, particularly on Mata Tirtha Aunsi, helps ensure the peace of their mothers’ souls.

The Mata Tirtha Conservation and Development Committee has organized a fair at the site, with extensive preparations to accommodate the influx of visitors expected on Wednesday. The committee has established several sub-committees to ensure the smooth conduct of the day’s events, focusing on the ritual of Shraddha, a ceremony of remembrance.

Local tradition holds that visiting Mata Tirtha Kunda on this day helps children absolve themselves of the spiritual debts owed to their mothers, reinforcing the day’s deep-rooted significance in honoring maternal figures.

Mata Tirtha Aunsi continues to be a day of reverence and reflection across Nepal, underscoring the nation’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring importance of maternal relationships.
