NHRC Urges Government to Resolve Teachers’ Protest Through Dialogue

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to address the ongoing protests by teachers through meaningful dialogue and ensure that disruptions to education are swiftly resolved.
In a statement issued today, NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel stressed the importance of resolving issues in the education sector—one of the nation’s most sensitive areas—through peaceful negotiation. He urged the government to foster an environment conducive to the resumption of regular classes.
“The Commission calls on the Government of Nepal to make school education laws more timely and inclusive, based on broad consultation with stakeholders, and to honor previous agreements made with teachers,” the statement read.
The Federation of Nepal Teachers has been staging a protest in Kathmandu for the past 13 days, demanding timely enactment of the Education Act, reforms in education policy, and implementation of earlier commitments made by the government.
The NHRC has been conducting on-site monitoring of the protest and raised concern that the ongoing agitation is impacting children’s right to education. The Commission warned that if the protest continues, it could also disrupt the results of the Secondary Education Examination (SEE), upcoming grade 12 exams, and the national school enrollment campaign.
