PM Dahal Departs for Italy to Attend Food Summit

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”” departed for Italy on Saturday evening to attend the United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) in Rome. The summit is scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 July 2023.

At the farewell gathering held at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Purna Bahadur Khadka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Narayan Kaji Shrestha, along with other ministers and high-ranking government officials, bid farewell to the Prime Minister.

Accompanying Prime Minister Prachanda on this crucial international event is his daughter, Ganga Dahal. The delegation representing Nepal also includes Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr Beduram Bhusal, and Member of National Planning Commission, Dr Jay Kant Raut, among other senior government officials.

Adding to the significance of the Prime Minister’s visit, leaders of the Maoist Centre, including General Secretary Dev Prasad Gurung and Vice-Chairpersons Agni Sapkota and Pampha Bhusal, were present at TIA to convey their well-wishes and support for the delegation.

It is reported that the Prime Minister (PM) is slated to address the official opening session of UNFSS+2 on Monday in the capacity of the Chair of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group. The Plenary Sessions on the agenda will cover two important topics: “School Meals” on July 24 and “Food System Transformation in Practice” on July 25.

During the course of the event, the Prime Minister will take the opportunity to engage in bilateral meetings with esteemed dignitaries from the United Nations (UN) system. These high-level dignitaries include the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), and the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), among others.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will also have an interactive session with the Nepali Diaspora in Italy.

Prime Minister is scheduled to return home on July 28.
