Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama (Tamang) announced that the provincial government is set to implement a targeted plan to conserve arable land from erosion caused by rivers and streams. The initiative aims to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers at risk of losing their land to natural degradation.
Speaking at an event in Panchakanya Rural Municipality-4, Nuwakot, on Friday, Chief Minister Lama said the program will focus on rehabilitating farmland that has become uncultivable due to erosion, particularly by the Likhu and Tandi rivulets.
A budget of Rs 300 million has been allocated for the project, which will be launched as a model scheme in select districts of Bagmati Province starting this year.
“We will offer relief to affected farmers by controlling the erosion caused by these rivulets and restoring the damaged land,” Lama said. The initiative seeks to conserve approximately 28,000 ropanis of land in Nuwakot alone.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with proper intervention—including irrigation infrastructure—the once-damaged land could be revitalized and returned to productive agricultural use, thereby enhancing local food security and rural livelihoods.
