CIB Warns Public to Stay Vigilant Against Online Fraud
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has issued an appeal urging the public to exercise caution against online fraud as complaints surge nationwide.
CIB Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Hobindra Bogati, revealed that multiple cases of online scams have been reported, with incidents originating from regions such as Pokhara and Chitwan currently under investigation.
In a seven-point advisory released on Friday, the CIB highlighted the growing threat of cybercrimes conducted via popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Viber, and Imo. These scams typically involve perpetrators impersonating representatives of digital wallets, banks, or financial institutions to deceive victims. Both government employees and ordinary citizens have been targeted in these fraudulent schemes.
A particular modus operandi involves scammers requesting OTPs (One-Time Passwords) under various pretenses to access sensitive information or accounts. The CIB has strongly advised the public against sharing OTPs or personal data with unknown callers or messages.
The Bureau has urged individuals to report suspicious activities or fraudulent attempts to the nearest Nepal Police office or directly to the CIB. This proactive measure aims to curb the rising number of online scams and ensure public safety.
