Renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit has been honored with this year’s Shreepati Social Service National Award in Pokhara. The award, established by the Shreepati Koirala Guthi of Pokhara Metropolis-9, Mahendrapul, recognizes Dr. Ruit’s exceptional contributions to elevating Nepal’s reputation internationally in health and humanitarian services.
During the Guthi’s 32nd Annual General Meeting on Saturday, Pokhara Ward-9 Chairperson Dipendra Marsani and others presented the award, which includes a cash prize of NPR 222,222, the Shreepati Social Service Medal, and a copper plaque. Dr. Ruit, the Executive Director and founder of the Tilganga Eye Foundation, expressed gratitude, stating that the recognition inspired him to take on greater responsibilities in social service.
In addition to Dr. Ruit, senior journalist Narayan Karki was honored with the Social Journalism Award. Acknowledged for his contributions to social service through journalism, Karki received NPR 22,222, a shawl, and a letter of appreciation.
According to Guthi Secretary Nawaraj Koirala, the Shreepati Social Service National Award is presented annually to individuals and organizations excelling in fields such as disaster relief, education, health services, science and technology, social awareness, and community development.
“Dr. Ruit has been specifically recognized for his remarkable work in humanitarian services, particularly in eye care,” said Koirala. A six-member selection committee, led by Guthi Chairperson Phanindra Raj Koirala, chose the awardees for this year.
In previous years, notable recipients of the award have included Maiti Nepal, the National Innovation Centre, Padma Bhawani Model Vidyashram of Sarlahi, and the Bindhyabasini Religious Area Development Committee of Pokhara.
