Finance Ministers of Nepal and China Discuss Bilateral Cooperation during G-20 Meeting in India

During the G-20 meeting held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, a significant bilateral meeting took place between Finance Minister Dr. Prakasharan Mahat of Nepal and Chinese Finance Minister Liu Kun. The meeting served as an opportunity for the two ministers to discuss various issues concerning the mutual relations between their countries.

The Finance Ministers acknowledged the importance of considering each other’s interests and concerns. Minister Dr. Mahat expressed his gratitude for China’s development assistance in Nepal, highlighting the meeting between the finance ministers of both countries during his visit to Nepal in 2019. During that visit, the Chinese President had pledged to support Nepal’s overall economic development, but the implementation of the promised cooperation projects faced challenges, primarily due to China’s indifference.

Minister Dr. Mahat emphasized the potential for cooperation in the road project that would connect Nepal and China through a crucial border point. He expressed his belief that this project could become a significant area of collaboration, urging both countries’ relevant bodies to undertake the necessary preparations and advance the project promptly. Additionally, Minister Dr. Mahat expressed hope for the timely implementation of the Tokha-Chhare tunnel.

Chinese Finance Minister Liu Kun reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development. He expressed his desire to assist Nepal in achieving its economic goals and expressed confidence in the timely implementation of the cooperation project discussed during the meeting.

The meeting between Finance Minister Dr. Mahat and Chinese Finance Minister Liu Kun represents a positive step towards strengthening bilateral relations and fostering economic cooperation between Nepal and China. Both ministers displayed optimism about future collaborations, indicating a mutual willingness to overcome challenges and work towards shared objectives.
