Government to Illuminate Major Cities Across Nepal

The government has unveiled an ambitious plan to brighten up major cities across the country, including the bustling Kathmandu Valley. This initiative aims to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and safety of urban areas through the installation of modern street and traffic lights.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT), preparations are already underway to implement this innovative lighting scheme. The plan involves the installation of energy-efficient lighting solutions that ensure uninterrupted illumination throughout the day and night.

Minister Raghubir Mahaseth shared insights into the project, revealing that the installation of modern traffic lights will kick off in mid-July, starting with a pilot project in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. The ministry aims to extend this initiative to other cities beyond the valley, including Pokhara, Nepalgunj, Biratnagar, Janakpur, and Birgunj.

Securing the necessary budget for this transformative endeavor is currently a priority for the government. It is estimated that over Rs 100 million will be required for the modernization of lighting systems in major cities. The ministry is actively working on budget allocation, with plans to commence the project in the next fiscal year 2024/25.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing urban infrastructure and improving the overall quality of life for residents across Nepal.
