Increasing Cold Takes Toll on Daily Life in Jumla

As the mercury plummets below zero degrees Celsius, the biting cold in Jumla is casting a harsh shadow over the daily lives of its residents. The adverse effects of the chilling temperatures are becoming increasingly evident, impacting routines and health across the region.

Sarita Neupane, a resident of Chandannath Municipality-4, shared her struggles, stating that the plummeting temperatures make it challenging for locals to step outside in the morning and evening. The cold snap has prompted many to limit their outdoor activities, disrupting the usual flow of life in the region.

The local medical centers are witnessing a surge in patients seeking treatment for cold-related complications. Pujan Rokaya, the Director of the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, expressed concern over the rising number of patients reporting ailments associated with the cold. Instances of cold-related illnesses, including asthma and cold diarrhea, have seen a noticeable uptick, with over 200 patients seeking medical attention daily.

Chief of Raralihi Health Post in Tila Rural Municipality, Kamal Rawat, highlighted the vulnerability of certain demographics, noting that the increasing cold is disproportionately affecting children, the elderly, and pregnant individuals. The heightened susceptibility of these groups to the harsh weather conditions adds an additional layer of concern for healthcare providers.

According to the Weather Forecast Field Office in Jumla, the current weather conditions are particularly severe, with the minimum temperature in the district plummeting to -2.6 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature recorded is a relatively milder 15.6 degrees Celsius. As the cold wave persists, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to safeguard their well-being.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with healthcare providers to ensure the effective management of the growing health concerns associated with the plummeting temperatures. The community is advised to stay vigilant and prioritize their health and safety during this period of extreme cold weather.
