Nepal Police Expect 1.8 Million to Leave Kathmandu Valley During Festive Season
As the festive season approaches, the Nepal Police predict that approximately 1.8 million people will exit the Kathmandu Valley, marking a significant increase from last year. This estimate is 500,000 higher than the 1.3 million people who left during the previous Dashain festival, according to Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office Spokesperson, Bishwaraj Khadka. He emphasized that this number depends on favorable weather conditions.
Efforts to Reduce Road Accidents
In response to the surge in travelers, authorities have been working on measures to curb road accidents, which are often triggered by poor road conditions, overcrowded and speeding vehicles, and an excessive number of vehicles on the roads. Khadka revealed that consultations with key stakeholders have already been held, focusing on improving safety during this busy period. An integrated security plan, coordinated across all three districts of the valley, is in development to minimize accidents.
Special Security Scheme for Festivals
Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police, Tek Prasad Rai, has taken further action by directing all seven province police chiefs to implement a special security scheme for the upcoming festivals. During a virtual meeting held on Tuesday, AIG Rai urged the provincial police leaders to focus on crime prevention, closely monitor suspicious activities, and respond effectively to any incidents.
Collaborative Efforts for Public Safety
To reduce road accidents and prevent crimes, AIG Rai called for cooperation among all relevant authorities and stressed the importance of running public awareness campaigns. He also highlighted the need to intensify efforts to curb smuggling, which often spikes during festive periods.
“The Nepal Police must strive to build greater trust with citizens by providing efficient civic services during the festivals,” Rai stated, underscoring the role of police in maintaining public safety and security throughout the celebrations.
