Nepal Returns to the World Weightlifting Championship After 16-Year Hiatus

In an exciting development for the Nepali sports community, Nepal is set to make a remarkable return to the international stage by participating in the World Weightlifting Championship after a 16-year absence.

Five talented athletes, including three men and two women, will proudly represent Nepal at the prestigious event scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from September 3 to September 17, 2023.

Under the men’s category, Bikas Bhatta will compete in the 81-kg weight class, Bishal Singh Bista in the 96-kg category, and Sagar Bhandari in the 109-kg category. Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Tikamaya Gurung will vie for glory in the 55-kg category, while Sharada Chaudhary will take on competitors in the 64-kg category.

The Nepali team is also bolstered by a strong support system, with Jeevan Gautam serving as the coach, Ram Sundar Shrestha as the manager, and Parth Sarathi Gupt as the judge, ensuring that the athletes are well-prepared and equipped to face their international counterparts.

As the team embarks on this remarkable journey, Member-Secretary at the National Sports Council, Tanka Lal Ghising, expressed his heartfelt best wishes to the Nepali athletes, wishing them success in their endeavors and emphasizing the importance of their participation in promoting the sport of weightlifting in Nepal.

Nepal’s return to the World Weightlifting Championship is not only a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes but also a moment of pride and hope for the entire nation.
