Six Arrested, Including Customs Officials, for Smuggling 100 Kilograms of Gold

In a significant development, the Revenue Investigation Department (RID) took decisive action on Sunday, apprehending six individuals, including three government officials, for their alleged involvement in a massive gold smuggling operation, amounting to 100 kilograms of gold.

The Information Officer of RID, Nabaraj Adhikari, confirmed the arrests, revealing the identities of the apprehended suspects as Customs Officer Santosh Chand, X-ray Operator Saroj Shrestha, and Customs Invigilator Kumar Dhakal.

Additionally, the customs agents Sudarshan Gautam, Rukmena Subba, and Yadav Parajuli were also among those held by the authorities. With these recent arrests, a total of 16 individuals have now been detained in connection with the gold smuggling case.

The seizure of the substantial quantity of gold occurred at the Tribhuvan International Airport area. Alarmingly, the gold had managed to pass through customs undetected on a previous occasion before the authorities intervened and confiscated it on Wednesday. Investigations revealed that the gold had been clandestinely transported from Hong Kong, raising concerns about the effectiveness of airport security measures.

The RID’s swift and determined action sends a strong message against illegal activities and aims to bring those responsible to justice as the investigation continues. Authorities are now working rigorously to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network and ensure that such illicit activities are thwarted in the future.
