UML Leaders Echo Approval for TikTok Ban with Nuanced Stance

CPN-UML’s influential leader Mahesh Basnet has applauded the government’s decision to ban the Chinese app TikTok in Nepal. Expressing his views on social media, Basnet not only welcomed the move but also urged the government to promptly regulate other popular social networks such as Facebook and YouTube.

Basnet stated, “Welcome decision of the government to start TikTok ban in Nepal. Other social networks and YouTube should also be regulated immediately. Those who are committing crimes through this means should be brought under the scope of action.”

Support for the government’s action was echoed by other leaders within the UML party, albeit with a nuanced perspective. Rather than outright opposition, UML leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with the reliance on executive orders for actions that should ideally be governed by legislative processes. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel voiced his concerns on social media, emphasizing the importance of proper legal frameworks.

Former Communications Minister and UML lawmaker Gokul Baskota also refrained from objecting to the government’s decision, indicating a general alignment within the UML party regarding the regulation of social media platforms.
