Koshi River Witnesses Rising Water Levels; All 56 Sluice Gates Opened
The Saptakoshi River in Sunsari has experienced an unprecedented surge in water levels, marking the highest measurement this year. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Naresh Kumar Singh from the District Police Office in Saptari reported that the water levels at the Koshi barrage have risen significantly due to continuous rainfall in the mountainous regions.
In response to the alarming increase in water levels, authorities have taken swift action by opening all 56 sluice gates of the Koshi barrage. As a precautionary measure, a red alert has been issued to indicate the imminent danger at the barrage. At 4:00 am this morning, the water current was measured at a rate of 462,000 cubic feet per second (cu sec). Fortunately, the water current is now gradually receding.
It’s worth noting that the Saptakoshi River had previously recorded a water current measurement of 472,000 cu sec in 1989. Today’s measurement of 462,000 cu sec approaches that level, marking the highest observed in the last 34 years. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents living near the river basins to take necessary safety precautions in light of the rising water levels in the Saptakoshi.
The combination of incessant rainfall in the mountainous regions and the opening of the sluice gates has led to this unique scenario. As the water levels gradually subside, the local community remains vigilant and prepared for any potential developments.
